– Wailing Wall of Jerusalem :-
- We drive down to the Old City and start with the Wailing Wall, which represents the last remnants of the Jewish Temple, destroyed by the Romans.
It is a remnant of the ancient wall that surrounded the Jewish Temple courtyard and is one of the most sacred sites in Judaism outside of the Temple Mount itself.
It has been a site for Jewish prayer and pilgrimage for centuries, the earliest source mentioning Jewish attachment to the site dating from the 4th century. Usually, various types of Jews can be seen worshiping here.
After the Wailing Wall, we continue through the Arab Market to the Via Dolorosa, Jesus’ Way of Suffering which leads us to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Christian tradition Jesus was crucified and buried.
The site is venerated as Golgotha and is said to also contain the place where Jesus was buried (the sepulcher).
So the church has been an important Christian pilgrimage destination since at least the 4th century, as the purported site of the resurrection of Jesus.
And today it also serves as the headquarters of the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, while control of the building is shared between several Christian churches and secular entities in complicated arrangements essentially unchanged for centuries.
